Goal
Host an event where participants from all the game development clubs in Florida create a video game in under 48 hours.

Twitch Playthrough after Jam Completion | Joint Jam (2023)
While working as a director for UF GDA (now DevLUp Inc.), I collaborated with game development clubs across the state of Florida to host and manage Joint Jam '23, a 48-hour event where you create a video game! I managed volunteers and schedules, found event space, created event language, and designed event branding. I show how it went below!
Preparation
Before the event started, I was a primary organizer on behalf of the University of Florida. Initial brainstorming meetings generated excitement for collaboration between schools, but developments were slow. I took the initiative to help communication flow again by asking the right questions to the right people and following up on the requests I had made. I gently held organizers accountable while producing results myself - like promotional materials, the game jam homepage, and encouragement to my peers.
Insights
Of participants competed remotely.
Of teams submitted a finished game in time for judging.
Increase in participants from the previous year.
Joint Jam '23 was a success. We increased participation and engagement from the previous year. Higher-quality games were submitted, and we learned about our participants! They:
-
Enjoy puns and dad jokes
-
Desire a community where their work is appreciated and challenged
-
Want feedback so they can learn from their bugs and create better games in the future
Immediately after the 48-sprint to create a video game, the organizers streamed playthroughs of the games on Twitch and Discord. During this stream, we concurrently maintained a viewer average of:
48
on Twitch

35

Conculsion
During Joint Jam '23, I created my own game all while scheduling the opening and closing events, and provided brunch at the game jam space in Orlando all while participating in Gainesville. I'm so grateful I was able to enjoy the camaraderie of game development all while supporting other undergrads like myself all across Florida. The organizers and myself collaborated to create a really fun event I am proud to be a part of.

My professor representing Orangetheory Fitness while I present | Zoom (2023)
This was one of the most challenging and rewarding projects of my entire life. I earned a perfect score by analyzing insights about audiences, competitors, and channels (a place to advertise) to help communicate a logical ad campaign in a visualized and digestible way. Every single aspect of my slides was backed by data from Nielson MRI which I read, analyzed, and knew by heart before pitching.
I presented my strategy over Zoom to my professor, Kevin VanValkenburgh, who actually worked on the real 2021 Orangetheory Fitness campaign. He chose to ask questions throughout, and I had to be ready. I was well-rehearsed, not reading my slides, and had the perfect balance of information within my pitch deck.
Flip through my pitch below to see both a competitive and audience analysis, strategic flighting on my suggested channels, and a budgeting flowchart throughout the year. A recording of the live pitch is available upon request at morg.schafer@gmail.com.

Lastinger Center for Learning Communications Team | September (2023)
In January of 2023, I got hired as a communications intern at the Lastinger Center for Learning. I gained opportunities to work in web design, internal and external communications, graphic design, email marketing, public relations, and so much more.
Below is some public work I have done and can share with you, but the most valuable part of my experience so far is the amazing team I have been able to work alongside and learn from.
