Mystic Isle Main Menu (2022)

This project was a blast! Everything in this game (aside from three small objects) is an original asset. I personally look at game jams as an opportunity to collaborate and learn new things from my teammates. In this jam, I worked on my first 3D character models, and UI, and returned to some familiar and aesthetic low-poly environment design.

The game itself was an RPG explorer designed in 48 hours. I created it with three programmers, myself, and another artist. Simple quests prompt players to explore the Mystic Isle. Players collect the Book of Youth to leave the island but receive different endings depending on how many quests they complete.

For this project, I worked with some friends I met at a game jam the previous fall and the team dynamic was stellar. Our goal was to create a peaceful walking simulator, focusing on level design, particle systems, and non-linear gameplay. This was far from the shooters we had developed previously and forced us to focus on other aspects of appealing gameplay aside from mechanics. As a producer and artist on this project, it was my job to ensure the design of the game remained consistent with our calm, enjoyable, and pleasant objectives while developers were having a fun time.

 

Now, updating this page over a year later, I'm pleased to say we had such a fun time we have remained friends and completed over three other game jams together!

Why a Walking Simulator?

Our team was greatly inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. We wanted to accomplish at least a fraction of the peaceful and captivating level design. Due to our focus being on the art and user experience, we wanted the player to explore our level and enjoy a "walk" before anything else.
